Guitar Making Across The Ages
How many times have you wondered how a guitar was made or what it was made from?. Guitar making is an art and a science. The guitar has always been made from wood but these days composite material also plays a role. The tuners, bridge and other metal parts have also progressed to a high level of function. The guitar construction has changed but little over hundreds of years. The entire world contributes to the guitars we have today in the woods that come from these countries.
The guitar neck must be made from a very hard wood to resist twisting and maple has always been the choice for fine guitar necks. Before the truss rod was used in guitars it was even more fundamental to have a hard wood for the neck of the guitar.
Rosewod and maple are used for the guitar neck as well. These woods will last almost forever as they are hard wearing as well. Fret boards may be made to last a little longer if the surface is planed to produce an even surface again.
The simplest tuning mechanism for the guitar is a wooden peg with the string wrapped around it. With modern machine heads, as they are called, much finer tuning adjustments are possible. Bridges are also adjustable now as well. The combination of these improvements made an unbeatable combination. Now we also have the guitar tuner which helps all guitar players be in tune with each other as well as in tune with themselves.
The invention of the electrical pickup changed the course of history for all guitar players. At first crude and simple, the pickup evolved into a precise affair with identifiable sounds. The invention of the pickup lead immediately to the solid body electric guitar much as we know it today. Now the pickup allowed the guitar to be heard with a drummer or a band. It is safe to say that the history of the guitar was changed forever by the pickup.
The basic design and construction of the guitar has not changed despite the advances that have been made.
